Spring Fling is an eight-piece eco-friendly spring collection created for Earth Day. This collection was designed to be made using painted cardboard cutouts and plastic bags with a muslin base. Project guidelines were as follows.
"Reuse & Recycling Project:
Research an idea for the reuse, or recycling of a product, or a method procedure. Then generate ideas for a sustainable design using recyclable non-traditional materials related to environmental issues and/or apparel/textile items ready for reuse. Develop 8-10 sketches using the aforementioned materials. The budget is $0 for this project. One design will be selected, constructed, and presented at the Earth Day celebration at Centenary University. [Earth Day fashion show was canceled due to Covid, therefore physical garments were not created.]
The goal of this project is to implement strategies of sustainable design by creating artistic fashion through the reuse, recycling, and reconditioning of 'garbage' pieces that are designed for a landfill. The budget for this project is $0. If notions are needed for closure, they also have to be taken from existing products. Over-dyeing (i.e., reconditioning) is an option as long as there is sustainable justification and nothing is newly purchased. You create an outfit (top & skirt or pants, coat, dress, etc.) based on your inspiration/theme. This outfit must possess creativity and fulfill all concepts of fashion design. Materials need to flow well with the style of your intended design. The instructor must approve all plans."
