About the Enactus Act Up Program and their desired plans before COVID:
"The Act Up project began as our team collaborated with a local brewery by agreeing to upcycle their plastic nylon malt bags. The brewery inquired if we could make growler totes for them from the bags and the team readily agreed. Our next mission was to find a method to create the totes. We began open discussions with the Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault Crisis Center of Warren County, known as DASACC. DASACC has a sewing room for women in their programs, however, the sewing room has not been able to establish a formal training program for the women. We are establishing a formal training and production plan with DASACC and will be presenting a business model to their Board of Trustees on March 25, 2020.
We have also reached out to the community for assistance in getting the growler totes produced and for prototyping additional items. These items include reusable shopping bags, backpacks, messenger bags, laundry bags, and craft aprons. Currently, we are working with three local seamstresses and they are all excited to be part of this project. In addition, our team has set up an Internship opportunity for one of our Fashion students and we have purchased two sewing machine stations for the Fashion program.
Our Enactus team is currently collaborating with three additional breweries who have agreed to provide upcycling material and retail outlets for the growler totes and other products. These brewery owners are excited and engaged in the business model students presented to them. Several other local breweries are also interested in participating in this initiative. Our community upcycling project, Act Up, is off to a strong start. We plan to have upcycled products out into the retail market by March 30, 2020.
To spread awareness about upcycling throughout our community, we will also be hosting an Upcycling Fair during Earth Day events on Saturday, April 18. During this event, we will host an up-cycling competition for local students and provide upcycling workshops for the community."
For this internship, I helped create sample pieces, developed patterns, filmed videos of the design process for competition entries, and also created the program logo.
